I’m Christian Payne, an easily distracted autotelic. In this weekly dispatch I seek out novelty, explore the relations between things, plus where we might be going.
Thanks for joining in.

It’s glorious outside. I’m sure you’ll forgive me for heading out on the bike in order to find somewhere a little more fun to write this week’s dispatch.
I’ve done my best over the last few days to make the most of the weather. I’m spoilt with having bicycles and a motorbike to choose from. And despite today being World Motorcycle day, I chose to jump on the push bike. Exercise = well earned beer.

The audio below entitled ‘Magic Ticket’ goes into more detail, but I do like a bit of daytime film watching when I have the cinema to myself..
I enjoyed Furiosa and feel George Miller well and truly continues his legacy with this fantastic prequel. From the steady myth building, through to an action packed pay off.
25 photos that defined the modern age.
#TheWords
A fantastic geography lesson on Tajikistan.
What we are up against… Exposing the secret history of the making of the climate crisis should change everything about how we act to stop it.
This is the Tetris font.
#TheSound
If you have ran out of AudioMo’s to listen to there is so much to love about this episode of Short Cuts.
I’ve also listened to these special readings of 1984 celebrating its 75th anniversary. So good to hear a wide selection of reading styles.
And this episode of The Cluster F theory from Gia Milinovich and Professor Timotheus Vermeulen featuring Anna Kornbluh author of Immediacy had me stopping, rewinding and replaying to be sure I absorbed as much of the thinking as possible. Another must listen.
And on a lighter note, here are my AudioMo missives from the last week.
Day 15 - Museums On The Air
Day 16 - I appear to have a Shave Horse.
Day 17 - Magic Ticket
Day 18 - Symphony of the Real
Day 19 - Poetry Roulette
Day 20 Pints, Purpose and Pumps
In the ‘Symphony of the Real’ audio linked above I ponder on the rise of generative sound tools and what prompt based sound effect generation might mean for people working in field recording and foley capture. Here is Eleven Labs own trailer.
And here is what google is working on… Video to Audio research

I noticed that a clutch of Swan’s eggs had been abandoned on a local nest and my daughter wondered if we should eat them.
While I admire her forager’s spirit, I told her I think certain swans are protected by law against such things. Not just the one that stated only the Queen can eat them, but ‘The Wild Creatures and Forest Law’ Act (1971) which I think protects wild swans and their eggs.
Rumour was that Fellows of St John's Collage in Cambridge were the only ones along with Royalty allowed to eat Swan but that appears not to have happened for a very long time.
#TheThings
It’s been a while since I have been to a car boot sale. It’s a self imposed ban. Interesting watching a flipper in action though. Ignore the linkbaity title. I’m not sure older replica guns are totally banned as they are used in re-enactments.
There’s a brand new film camera from Pentax.
It’s £500 half frame camera with some interesting features. In the video Chris from PetaPixel says "...a smartphone is going to blow this away in regards to quality..." ?? I guess it depends on your definition of quality. He shot some of the most aesthetically pleasing images I've seen on the channel. In my opinion, organic scenes shot with an an ‘organic film’ camera will always trump digital.
It’s the 30th anniversary of the HGTTG game.
I’ve been playing with the shave horse this week and still have all my fingers
Just like a 3d printer, with enough raw material these can be self replicating.

The EU Council has withdrawn the vote on chat control.
Nayfumble are on the Documentally community map and that makes me happy.

Some of my other places include Letterboxd, Discogs, Flickr, Strava, Untappd, my audio RSS feed, LinkedIn, YouTube, Mastodon, a ham radio newsletter or search ‘Documentally’ on Wire, Birdsite, Bluesky or Daft Social.
Youtube are clamping down on people who subscribe to cheap premium plans with a VPN. Don’t forget you can also block YT adverts on some browsers. Tor Browser, Avast, Ghostery, WaterFox and Brave do a good job.
#TheEnd
Thanks for reading. My beer appears to have evaporated so it might be time to pedal home and earn another.
I’ll see some of you on Tuesday June 25th. 11am onwards at Orwell’s Grave behind the Church of All Saints in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, OX14 4AE.
Looks like it will be a lovely day. Have a great weekend.

Respond more than react.
See you out there.
